Types Of Kebab

There are many different variations on the kebab dish.

The most popular types of kebab in the UK are the Doner Kebab and the Shish Kebab.

Below you can read about the various types of kebab dish and how they are cooked.

Doner Kebab

Doner Kebab

A Doner Kebab is usually made of lamb or chicken which is slowly roasted on a vertical rotating spit. The name Doner Kebab translates as "Turning Roast" and similar dishes include Gyros, Shawarma and Taco al Pastor.

Usually a Doner Kebab is served in pita bread and accompanied with salad. In the UK the Doner Kebab is commonly eaten after a night out and are mostly purchased from late opening takeaway restaurants.

Shish Kebab

A Shish Kebab consists of cubed meat placed onto a skewer which is then either grilled or roasted. Any type of meat can be used and often fruit or vegetables are also placed on the skewer.

Shish Kebab is a Turkish word and translates as "Skewered Grilled Meat". In Greece and Turkey a Shish Kebab is known as Souvlaki. The dish is thought to have been invented by Medievel Turkic Soldiers who used their swords as a skewer and cooked the meat over an open fire.
